Climbing at 2024 Paris Olympics: How it works, Team USA stars, what else to know

Since when did climbing become an Olympic sport?

Climbing has entered the Tokyo 2021 Games Before that, the sport first entered the Olympic radar at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. The addition of climbing, as well as skateboarding and surfing, is part of the program. Expand the program to include urban sports and focus on increasing the popularity of youth. Climbing will remain on the agenda for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

 Climbing become Olympic sport

 How does Olympic climbing work?

Olympic sport climbing is divided into three categories: rock, speed and lead.

Climbing: Players climb a 4.5-meter (about 15-foot) wall without ropes in a short amount of time and effort.

Procedure: Riders climb a 15-meter (about 50-foot) wall in six minutes at a time.

Speed: In one-on-one elimination rounds including a race against the clock, climbers climb a 15-meter wall with five degrees of pitch. The best athletes do it in less than six seconds for men, while most of the top women rest for seven seconds.

What makes these games different from Tokyo is that speed climbing is separated into its own program, combining rock and surface. This structure allows climbers to focus on their expertise.

The scoring system is also different from that used in Tokyo. The scores for each penalty in the 2021 games were tallied to arrive at the final score. But with speed out of balance, the new trial land for rock and surface includes 200 higher. In bouldering, climbers earn points for climbing the wall through different "zones" (5 points for low zone, 10 points for high zone) and climbing up (25 points ). Points are deducted for attempts and the rock circle and four rock problems are worth 100 points.

In Lead, players earn points by keeping the top 40 teams - the number of points for each team increases as they climb the wall. If the athlete moves to the next team but cannot keep it safely, he will be awarded 0.1 points above his previous score.

Twenty men and 20 women compete in rock/lead. There are 14 races for both men and women on the fast course. All climbers participate in two sprints (on two different walls). They are ranked 1-14 based on the fastest time, which determines the races for the next elimination rounds.
